What Do You Do If Your Have Flu or Covid-like Symptoms?

This is a story of Khadijah’s  nephew, Amran, a 30-year-old bank officer. He was fully vaccinated and received AstraZeneca as follows:

  • First dose: 28 May 2021.
  • Second dose: 30 July 2021.

Amran wrote: I started having headache on Saturday afternoon, 20 November 2021.

Question: Before Saturday night did you have any problem? Say, a day before that – Thursday or Friday — did you feel the problem was coming?

A: No.

Q: On Saturday – what were your problems?

A: I had headache. This started in the afternoon and lasted to the night.

Sunday, 21 November 2021.

A: I had sore throat in morning. Flu by evening and cough by night.

Q:  How bad was the sore throat / cough?

A: Sore throat was painful but bearable. Cough not so bad.

Q: You did Covid-19 test?

A: Yes. I didusing the Home Test Kit (HTK).

Q: You did it yourself at home?

A: Yes.

Q: And the result was positive?

A: Yes

Q: Then you started to take the herb?

A: Yes

Q: When?

A: Sunday night (i.e. one day after the problem started).

Q: What happened after taking one dose of the herb?

A:  I felt normal. Headache and flu subsided. Sore throat and cough just a bit la. Apart from that nothing much.

Q: You felt better?

A: I felt the same. Not much difference. Energy level remained slightly low. Feeling slightly weak. But it was a very minor one.

Then I was asked by my office to consult our medical doctor. I went to the doctor on Monday, 22 November 2021 and did a PCR test.

The PCR test result showed I was negative for Covid-19.

Wednesday, 24 November 2021.

Q: Did you go to the office today?

A: Unfortunately yes. No leave was given if I am tested negative.

Q:  Nadiah told me that you haven’t fully recovered from your recent episode. Please share with me what’s happening.

Thursday, 25 November 2021.

A: Wasalam. Just finished work. Yes, I’ve not fully recovered yet. The cough and flu remained the same but sore throat and headache kurang (less).

Q:  How many times did you take the herbs?

A: Four times in total

Q: After 4 times of taking the herbs – still the same?

A: Still had sore throat, headache and lately feeling fatigued too.  Head / brain starting to hurt when coughing.

Q: The problem came back again? No improvement?

A: Problems persisted with slight improvement.

Q:  The PCR test result may be WRONG? Why not repeat the PCR.

A: I suspect it may be wrong. I’ll do the PCR test again.

Friday, 26 November 2021.

Khad: Just spoken with Amran. He felt much better today. Taking herb tonight. He’s doing HTK tonight and a repeat PCR tomorrow.

  • This time the Home Test Kid was negative for Covid-19.

Sunday, 28 November 2021.

Q:  Salam Am. How are you today?

A: I’m feeling better. All symptoms seemed to have disappeared. Feeling much better really.I last took the herb last night.

Tuesday, 30 November 2021.

Q:  Hi Am, how are you today? Please share the PCR test result.

A:  Salam Wan Chor. My apologies. Been caught up with work. And yes, the PCR result came back. Again, the result was negative for Covid-19.

Q: How are you feeling now?

A: Feeling healthy as a horse. Now, no symptoms whatsoever. Had stopped taking the herbs yesterday.

According to the website:

COVID-19 affects different people in different ways. Most infected people will develop mild to moderate illness and recover without hospitalization.

Most common symptoms:

  • fever
  • cough
  • tiredness
  • loss of taste or smell
  • Less common symptoms:
  • sore throat
  • headache
  • aches and pains
  • diarrhoea
  • a rash on skin, or discolouration of fingers or toes
  • red or irritated eyes

Serious symptoms:

  • difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • loss of speech or mobility, or confusion
  • chest pain

Seek immediate medical attention if you have serious symptoms. People with mild symptoms who are otherwise healthy should manage their symptoms at home.

I was curious and google this question: What do you do if you have mild Covid symptoms?

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/if-you-are-sick/steps-when-sick.html

Here is the answer: If you have a fever, cough or other symptoms, you might have Covid-19. Keep track of your symptoms.

1.  Stay home. Most people with COVID-19 have mild illness and can recover at home without medical care.

2. Take care of yourself. Get rest and stay hydrated. Take over-the-counter medicines, such as acetaminophen, to help you feel better.

3. Stay in touch with your doctor. Be sure to get care if you have trouble breathing, or have any other emergency warning signs.

4. Avoid public transportation, ride-sharing, or taxis.Do not leave your home, except to get medical care. Do not visit public areas.Separate yourself from other people.

Good advice indeed! Let us hope that the problems would just go away!

No need to do anything? How do you feel about this advice – don’t do anything?

To be honest, I would be terrified! I would want to do something for myself, provided of course, what I am going to do is not outright stupidity!

So, when Am complained of sore throat, headache and cough I thought taking herbs would not cause him any harm.

We were not sure if Am just got flu and not Covid – even though the initial test he did at home did indicate that he was positive for Covid.

One question to ask: How often did Am get flu —- for this year alone, did he ever have flu? And when he got flu — what were the symptoms?

Am said he had been well all year long. He was healthy!

So, the headache, sore throat and cough together with the positive test result on 20 November 2021 rightfully caused alarm. Since there is no medication for mild case of Covid (or flu), the next logical thing to do is for Am to take herbs. Am did just that. And the herbs helped him!
