The Disease Delusion – conquering the causes of chronic illness for a healthier, longer and happier life

The Author: Dr. JEFFREY S. BLAND, PhD is a biochemist by training. He served as Director of Nutritional Research at the Linus Pauling Institute of Science and Medicine in the early 1980’s, working directly with two-time Nobel Laureate Dr. Linus Pauling, whom he considers his lifelong mentor. Dr. Bland  is a renown leader in  nutritional medicine. He co-founded the Institute for Functional Medicine and is known to many as the “father of functional medicine.” Over the past 35 years, Dr. Bland has traveled more than six million miles teaching more than 100,000 healthcare practitioners in the USA, Canada, and 50 other countries about functional medicine.

In his book, The Disease Delusion, Dr. Bland introduces the reader to the medicine of the 21st century. It is a medicine that is personalized to the specific needs of the person to result in health, not just the treatment of the symptoms of disease.  In Chapter 11 of his book Dr. Bland wrote about A new approach to your health. Here are some quotations.

  • Health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO) “is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease and infirmity.” That’s a great definition and it is a lofty goal — one we all hope to achieve. The question is how.
  • Hippocrates … formulated an answer …. the healing power of nature … the idea that if organisms are provided the right environment, diet and lifestyle support, they can heal themselves.
  • This new approach to health requires “that individual participate fully in managing his/her health. By changing our diet, lifestyle and environment … we can directly affect how our genes are expressed and thus the pattern of our health.

Dr. Bland outlined five basic concepts in the practice of functional medicine.

  1. Our health is not predetermined by our genes. No single gene controls the presence or absence of a chronic disease … but families of genes. The expression of these gene can be influenced and indeed altered by a range of lifestyle, diet and environmental factors — exercise, stress, pollutants, radiation, specific foods, phytonutrients, etc.
  2. Chronic illness is a result of an imbalance in one or more of the core physiological processes. Over time such imbalance resulted in altered function as evidenced by specific signs and symptoms which we call disease. Changes to lifestyle, diet and environment can bring our core physiological processes back into balance.
  3. The absence of illness does not necessarily equate to the presence of wellness. A diagnosis of chronic illness comes after a period of declining function.
  4. Each person’s physiological response to lifestyle, dietary and environmental factor is unique to his /her genetic makeup. What this means, there is no such thing as one size-fits-all formula.
  5. Drugs effective for the management of acute disease may be inappropriate for the long-term management of chronic illness.

Functional medicine focuses on treating the cause of a chronic illness — that is, imbalances in the core physiological processes — not the symptoms and signs that are the effect of the cause. This approach is not new! Practitioners of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic medicine are saying the same thing …”indeed, long before anything was known about cellular biology, genetics or pathology, Eastern medical practitioners, through observation, embraced concepts very similar to those we apply in functional medicine.”

ALL THREE OF THESE FACTORS — LIFESTYLE, DIET, ENVIRONMENT — PLAY SIGNIFICANT ROLES IN DETERMINING HOW OUR GENES ARE EXPRESSED AND HOW OUR HEALTH IS SHAPED OVER TIME …. this may seem obvious. But it is not. It is a revolutionary concept in medical thinking!

Diet: Too many of us are malnourished — not from eating too little, but rather from eating too much of too little. It is called overconsumptive undernutrition … it is not a deficiency of calories but a surfeit of empty calories. This is the malnutrition characterized by obesity, diabetes, heart disease, osteoporosis, dementia and other chronic illnesses associated with inflammation.

Lifestyle: Smoking kills; alcohol and drug abuse mess up your life very badly— then kill. Exercise is extremely important … a rock-bottom minimum of 120 minutes a week. The standard should be 5 to 6 sessions of at least 20 minutes per session, 5 to 6 times a week. The excuse of not enough time is unwarranted.

No one can avoid stress altogether. What we now know is that it isn’t the stressor itself but rather our response to it that can amplify our cellular communication process to alarm status. The ways to deal with such responses …. through various techniques of relaxation and mindfulness.

Environment: How can an individual control his /her environment? We can do the best we can for ourselves even though we have no control over the bigger issues. At least we try to do the following:

  • eat organic foods as much as possible.
  • avoid excessive sun exposure.
  • drink purified water.
  • use headset with our cell phones.
  • avoid processed foods and personal care products with synthetic ingredients.
  • wash our hands before eating.
  • avoid environments that supports bad health habits.
  • design our own environment to be safe places to live.

Supplements and pharmaceuticals: Use nutritional supplements as nutraceuticals and medical foods over-the-counter therapies … these are the therapies of choice.

The twelve-week time (3 months) frame:  There is no magic bullet.

  • Years of experience and many clinical studies make it pretty clear that this is the average time it takes to make a real change to your cellular biology and patterns of genetic expression.
  • Some people notice the benefits of personalized changes to lifestyle, diet and environment right away; for others progress is slow in coming. …
  • Changing of your lifestyle, diet and environment is not like taking a drug to cure a specific symptoms (which can be quick or immediate).
  • A program of change is aimed at transforming a pattern of genetic expression and the nature of the control those genes exercise over the physiological network. Such change happens across a sequence of multiple changes –one change deriving from another in a chain of action and reaction — and it occurs over a longer period of time.

In the Foreword of this book, Dr. Mark Hyman, M.D. wrote:

  • As we spend more and more for health care, we get less and less. The answer to this paradox should be obvious to all of us: what we are doing is not working. Our current medical model was constructed to treat acute disease … we identified a single agent for illness — a microbe—and a single agent to treat it — antibiotics. Since then, medicine has pursued a quest — to find a pill for every ill. This quest has failed. We need a different paradigm, a different model for diagnosing and treating this new epidemic of chronic disease.
  • Paradigm shifts are hard, detractors abound, yet the evidence is in and the failure of our current (medical) approach is evident.

Comment

Read carefully what Dr. Jeffrey Bland wrote! We are glad to say that for the past 20 years since the existence of CA Care, we have been telling patients a similar message! We also tell patients: If you are on our therapy for some 2 to 4 weeks and do not benefit from it, do not take our herbs anymore — please go and find someone else for help. We want to be honest and truthful about this!

The Good Old Days When They Could Cure Cancer in America: Part 1

I first know the work of Dr. Eli Jones after reading an article by Don Yance: The wisdom of Dr. Eli Jones ….

Eli Jones (1850-1933) was an American medical doctor in the 19th-20th centuries. He claimed to be able  cure cancer. Jones studied conventional medicine and practiced for five years before deciding that the medicine of the day was harmful. He then turned to eclectic medicine, which relied upon herbal extracts including those of the Native Americans. He went back to school, graduated, and practiced eclectic medicine for another five years. He decided to learn homeopathy, went back to school, and then practiced as a homeopath.

Here are some excerpts from his book, Cancer- Its Causes, Symptoms and Treatment -Giving the Results of over Forty Years’ Experience in the Medical Treatment of this Disease. This book was published in 1911 — one hundred years ago! Read it … and see if you can learn anything from Dr. Jones experiences!

What Can We Learn From This 100-Year-Book

  1. Some people may say: This book is outdated, science today has progressed beyond all those things that were written!

My response: Agreed – the language lacked “scientific flavour” but the wisdom remained intact and valid.  ARROGANCE, PRIDE and EGO stand in the way for some people who don’t want to learn from others or the past.

x a Know-the-past x b Examine-the-past

  1. To be a successful cancer specialist, a person must know the materia medica from A-Z …not from one school of medicine but of all Schools. In simple language, if treating is only about cutting, poisoning (chemo) and burning (radiation) – what do who end up with?
  2. No all doctors are suitable to be cancer specialists — many are called but few are chosen! The successful treatment of cancer is the study of a lifetime and should not be attempted by a lazy man, for it means constant study. Can we also add — not only it is not for a lazy man but also men who only go for the money and not for the patients’ wellbeing!

How To Decide What Is Right For You

by JEROME GROOPMAN, M.D. AND PAMELA HARTZBAND, M.D.

Jerome Groopman, is an oncologist who guides his patients through life-or-death decisions. His wife, Pamela Hartzband is a noted endocrinologist and educator at Harvard Medical School who helps patients make critical decisions about their long-term health.

The authors wrote:

  • In our role as doctors, our aim is to help our patients understand what makes sense for them, what treatment are right given their individual values and goals. We are especially mindful not to impose our preferences about our own health on our patients.

 Your-medical-mind

We are drowning in information, while starving for wisdom ~ E.O. Wilson

Making the right medical choices is harder than ever. Whether we’re deciding to take a cholesterol drug or choosing a cancer treatment, we are overwhelmed by information from all sides: our doctors’ recommendations, dissenting expert opinions, confusing statistics, conflicting media reports, the advice of friends, claims on the Internet, and a never ending stream of drug company ads.

Some assert that you need more — more tests and more treatment. Others insist that you need less.

There are many facets of human nature.

Naturalism vs Technology

  • Some are naturalism orientated believing that the body can often heal itself if given the proper environment, harnessing the mind-body connection and supplementing with herbs, vitamins, and other natural products.
  • On the opposite end of the this spectrum is the technology orientated believing that cutting-edge research yielding new medications and innovative procedures holds the answers.

Maximal vs Minimal Treatment

  • Some people are profoundly proactive about their health, believing that more is usually better.
  • In contrast, those with a minimalist mind-set aim to avoid treatment if at all possible, and if not possible, they try to use the fewest medications at the lowest possible doses or to select the most conservative surgery or procedure. Minimalists hold to the notion that “less is more.

Believers vs Doubters

  • Believers approach their options with the sense that there is a successful solution for their problem somewhere.
  • Doubters approach all treatment options with profound skepticism. They are deeply risk-averse, acutely aware of the potential side effects and limitations of drugs and procedures.

Understand the numbers behind the words

  • Stating that 35 percent of people with a serious illness are cured by a certain treatment has a hopeful resonance, while stating that 65 percent of people die despite that therapy has a pessimistic sound. But both statements are factually correct and describe the same data.
  • Stating that a drug works “in the majority of patients” sounds quite different from specifying that 51 percent of people responded to the treatment, yet both are accurate.
  • To clearly understand the true benefit of a treatment, try to learn the “number needed to treat,” how many people with a condition similar to yours need to receive a therapy in order to improve or cure one person.

The authors related a patient who used his scientific analytical knowledge to make decisions about his medical treatment. I am a scientist. I understand how research is conducted, what statistics show and don’t show. I was well aware of all the garbage that’s out there on the Internet. So I decided to go with top-tier journal, well-accredited papers, authored by specialists who are at recognized institutions.

After experiencing the medical system himself this patient suddenly came to this conclusion.

  • Clinical medicine is an area that moves away from clarity, an area that I think of as having higher uncertainty. You can’t really make rational decisions in this world. Doctors like to have what I call a “badge of rationality,” because it gives them authority, and they try to appear competent for the patients … even if the situation is highly uncertain, they go out of their way to appear certain, to ooze rationality?
  • They told me I had a 50 percent chance of getting graft-versus-host disease, with a 10 percent change of it affecting my liver, a 40 percent chance hurting my intestine, a 30 percent change involving my skin. I have no way to understand what all that means.

Who is the best doctor

  • We are often asked who is the “best doctor” to treat a particular condition. One criterion is a physician’s knowledge about your condition and its treatments, his or her command of the scientific data, so-called evidence-based medicine.
  • But we believe the best doctors go one step further and practice “judgment-base medicine,” meaning they consider available evidence and then assess how it applies to the individual patient.
If medicine were an exact science like mathematics, there would be one correct answer for each problem …. But medicine is an uncertain science.

How do you know what is right for you? The answer often lies not with the experts, but within you.

You can choose the right treatment, the one that fits your values and way of living. Understanding your preferences begins with reflecting on your mind-set.

Dr. Groopman’ Experience

…the culture of my upbringing and the trauma of my father’s death made me a believer in modern medicine, is power and is promise …. My mentors at UCLA were maximalists in treatment, firmly committed to doing everything all the time.

And it was that maximalist mind-set that resulted in the signature medical mistake of my life. One Sunday morning in Los Angeles, feeling fine, I stood up from a chair and nearly collapsed from excruciating back pain. The pain persisted for weeks, and the doctors I consulted had no ready explanation for it.

But I was sure that medical science could pinpoint the cause of my pain. There had to be a fix somewhere in the universe of physicians and procedures.

I lacked the patience to wait. I was headstrong, intolerant of the lack of explanation for my misery. And I didn’t believe that my body would heal itself …. I underwent the most aggressive operation, a spinal fusion …..disastrous consequences: worsening pain and increased debility.

The aggressive and unsuccessful surgery was a hard lesson …. it now seems self-evident … mistakes are often necessary to bring insights. I learned to pay more attention to risk, to take time to consider side effects.

The Wrong Prescription: Wisdom of a medical doctor

TheWrongPrescription

Medical doctor, Dr. Manoj Kapoor of India wrote an interesting book, sharing with us his experiences and wisdom. Here are some of the quotes which you may wish to ponder on. Is this something that is happening today, not only in India but also in other countries (no matter where you are)?

  • This is a book about doctors by a practising doctor who honestly did not want to be a doctor. Strange, isn’t it?
  • … my father said that he wanted me to … study medicine. I submitted to his wishes …. I succeeded and became a doctor. I completed an M.S. in Surgery … I practise in the field of gastrointestinal surgery … and set up a rudimentary kind of hospital in 1991. It took seven years of struggle to get reasonable results.

Reality of Present-day Medicine

  • All doctors do not treat all patients successfully all the time.
  • Medicine is a tough, demanding profession, but God has created a machine which has an in-built auto-healing processes. Human race is older than …. (modern) medicine. Patients survived then and will continue to survive and live.
  • Medicine still remains an art in applied common sense while treating most ailments. The moment we leave reasoning and correlation out and start applying modern technology advances, we get trapped in misdiagnosing.
  • A clinical diagnosis is followed by technology to prove that we are on the right track. After diagnosing correctly, the treatment modality may vary from conservative through wildly flamboyant to utterly nonsensical. Example: They used an AK-47 to kill a fly rather than something lighter like a plastic spatula.
  • Patients are the best teachers. All successful clinicians are first excellent history takers.
  • Science has progressed by leaps and bounds. A paradigm shift has happened. It is ” I treat and I cure”. However, the irony is that a cure for diseases like the common cold has still not been found.
  • Science has fantastic treatments for all the symptoms, but the disease has not been eradicated…. and new ones are emerging.

Four Kinds of Doctor

  • What kind of a doctor would you like to consult? The directory of doctors is akin to …. four types of eating outlets.
  • At the top of the category come the ones which serve the best food and are famous because of that.
  • The second … consists of the ones which are famous because of their marketing and business skills and not necessarily the …food they offer.
  • The third … comprises of the ones who serve fantastic cuisine and are authentic in taste but are not famous.
  • The fourth category …which neither serve good food nor are famous.
  • Take your pick. If you can get and afford those who are famous and also good, you are lucky. And if you get any of the other three categories without knowing, God be with you.

Drug Company and its Sales or Medical Rep

  • The focus of the pharmaceutical industry … is definitely growth and profit.
  • It should be admitted that a multinational and national company official knows more about … drugs than the doctors themselves who profess to treat patients.
  • Good reps teach doctors about the molecule, its pharmacology, its powers, its side effects and the indications for using it.
  • The marketing guys are very reticent about the side effects of a molecule. They try to avoid any adverse comment till a new more advanced molecule of the same family of medicines in launched. The older molecule is dumped because it had limitations, they then venture to say.

Reality of Life

  • I realised that brilliance in one’s subject, honesty and hard work need not translate into success always. We are good doctors but not marketing experts.
  • Survival of the fittest is the order of the day in the profession of healing.
  • The need to earn is there in every profession and every business.
  • To-day’s world is fast-paced and everything is materialistic … but the greed for luxury and the lust for earning a lot of money to feed that greed is driving sane people towards insanity.
  • Experience has taught me that free counsel is least appreciated and rarely acknowledged.
  • The definition of a successful person in today’s world is “one who has money and knows how to flaunt it.”
  • Somebody wrote … Money can buy a house, but not a home; money can buy amusement but not happiness; money can buy medicine but not health.

Rabbit, Tortoise and Fox Ways of Earning Money

  • There are numerous ways of earning money and getting rich … the way of the rabbit, the way of the tortoise and the way of the fox.
  • Who these quick foxes are in something that is largely known to the medical fraternity, but there has been a tendency in the profession to close ranks and, in effect, shield such persons.
  • An effective system of checks and balances has to be evolved to see that patients are not exploited for the purpose of earning more money. If a reasonable option is available, the patient should be told about it.
  • The quick foxes may be an outcome of the system which is slowly being taken over by money-minded, non-medical businessmen and administrators.
  • The rich businessman and entrepreneur create the best working places and employs good professionals. As the doctor gets trapped in working at the best places where the elite of society come, he is forced to adopt the tricks of the trade.
  • The quick money game is run in the name of these credulous doctors. These naive brethren of the fraternity end up being puppets in somebody else’s hands. Professionally competent people who know nothing beyond patient welfare get exploited.
  • Targets are given to these main doctors who become the power lobbies and earners of the hospital. Little does this gullible set of doctors realize that it is their reputations which is at stake.
  • The administrators patronized and promote the ones who toe their line. No doubt a good earning potential is realized and a hand in glove policy gets initiated.

Honesty and Ethics

  • Do we knowingly mislead those who do not know what we know?
  • Does the professional get away with it all because everything has several answers and multiple angles?
  • … if any decay has set in, then we need to acknowledge collective responsibility – society, governance machinery, the socioeconomic milieu, the increasingly competitive medical industry, all have contributed to the way things are.
  • I count myself as a part of the entire system. I blame the system and not the individual who falls prey to it. All I want to do now is to wake up and work together with my medical brethren, unite for a clean and ethical medical fraternity.
  • … the appeal is not to make it a money-spinning machine at the cost of fellow human beings’ sufferings.

A living problem is better than a death certificate

How many of us understand the above wisdom? We don’t. Let Dr. Kapoor explain what that means!

A rich and famous person woke up in the middle of the night complaining of chest pain. One of the best physicians … was summoned to his bungalow. The patient’s blood pressure and electrocardiogram (or ECG — a test that checks for problems with the electrical activity of your heart)  turned out to be normal. He was given anti-acidity medications with a sleeping pill. He slept well.

However, in cardiology, protocols of chest pain investigation are such that any pain in the chest is considered to be heart related until proven otherwise.

The patient visited the hospital as per the advice.

A repeat cardiogram was normal. Blood enzyme studies … was normal. He was nonetheless asked to get an echocardiography done (a sonogram of the heart.  This  is not abbreviated as ECG. Echocardiography uses standard two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and Doppler ultrasound to create images of the heart. Echocardiography has become routinely used in the diagnosis, management, and follow-up of patients with any suspected or known heart diseases).  It turned out to be normal.

…. Stress test or TMT was requested by the doctors … this too was absolutely normal.

Nonetheless, angiography was advised (Note:  Angiography is an X-ray exam of the arteries and veins to diagnose blockages and other blood vessel problems. During the angiogram, the doctor inserts a thin tube into the artery through a small nick in the skin. Contrast agent (X-ray dye) is injected to make the blood vessels visible on the X-ray).

In those days (in India) angiography could itself lead to complications. It is after all an invasive procedure.

Unfortunately, the patient died after this procedure.

The dividing line between valid investigations and unnecessary investigations with commercial motive … is difficult to draw. To what extent does an action by a doctor in the course of treating a patient qualify under the fox category?

Why I Don’t Support ‘Breast Cancer Awareness’

Anita Moorjani  Speaker and bestselling author of ‘Dying to Be Me’

Posted: 10/23/2014 1:27 pm EDT Updated: 10/23/2014 1:59 pm EDT

Recently, someone approached me and reminded me that October is “breast cancer awareness” month. They asked me to support their efforts to launch a campaign in the fight against breast cancer, and when I politely declined, they were surprised. They had assumed that as a cancer survivor myself, I would be fervently supportive of their efforts to fight the war against cancer.

Mother Teresa once said, “I was asked why I don’t participate in anti-war demonstrations. I said that I will never do that, but as soon as you have a pro-peace rally, I’ll be there.”

She offered important insight, and in a similar vein, I support any effort to promote and advocate health-awareness programs!

Consider this. Think about all the money we spend on waging war: wars against drugs, wars against poverty, wars against terrorism, wars against heart disease, wars against cancer and so on. We are constantly being bombarded by advertisements and campaigns encouraging us to go for earlier and earlier detection tests of all kinds, which again only encourage us to focus on looking for illness! We are also continually being asked to donate to all these “wars against illness” and to the research associated with them. Now imagine if we were to put the same amount of money, energy and focus into “waging health awareness programs” instead. Think about what a different outcome we would have.

The problem is that our health care system, as it stands now, is much more focused on our illnesses than on our health, perhaps partly because there is much more money to be made from illness than wellness.

Most people don’t really know what true wellness is. Most people have no idea what it means to take care of their health, and have no idea that our physical well being has a LOT to do with our mental, emotional, and spiritual well being! It’s all tied together! Physical illness does not happen in a vacuum. There are reasons why your immune system becomes depleted, making you more susceptible to illness.

If it were up to me, I would want people to know that diseases and many other life-threatening ailments are not just medical issues. Their cause can be rooted in our emotional or mental wellbeing, or our environment. We are putting all our energy and research dollars into looking for medical cures. We are spending billions of dollars on making everyone aware of cancer, heart or kidney disease, diabetes, etc., by focusing our time, money and energy on finding such cures — which in and of itself has become an industry — yet the numbers of people getting these diseases do not seem to decrease. And I’m not just talking about age-related illnesses; I’m talking about illness in the young, as well. Until health caregivers start to focus on health, instead of illness, and until researchers look deeper into the connection between disease and our emotions and our lifestyle, we will not find a cure in medical research alone.

When someone is diagnosed with cancer or other life-threatening illness, the focus needs to be not just on his or her physical state, but on his or her emotional state as well. Perhaps even more so! Ideally, they need to be asked questions by their health care provider along the lines of:

  • Do you love and value yourself?
    • Are you happy?
    • Are there people in your life who matter to you and to whom you matter?
    • Do you feel your life has purpose?
    • What are you passionate about?
    • What brings you joy?

Until we start to really take seriously the connection between our emotional and mental well-being with physical illnesses, we will still be poking around in the dark, looking for a cures. And until the medical industry changes its focus from one of purely searching for illness to one of promoting wellness instead, we will not see a significant decrease in the numbers of people being diagnosed with disease. Let’s wage health, not war!

WHAT RADIATION THERAPY DOES TO THE BODY (PART 6)

Cancer Epidemeology

by Yeong Se;k Yee & Khadijah Shaari

In this segment, we reviewed a cancer textbook called “FUNDAMENTALS OF EPIDEMIOLOGY” written by Professor Philip Nasca, PhD, MPH and Professor Harris Pastides, PhD, MPH. Both are Professors of Epidemiology at different prominent Universities in the US.

Cancer Epidemiology, as you know, is the study of the factors affecting cancer, as a way to infer possible trends and causes. The study of cancer epidemiology uses epidemiological methods to find the cause of cancer and to identify and develop improved treatments.

In Chapter 11…Ionizing, Non-Ionizing and Solar Radiation and Cancer, Professor Harris Pastides elaborates on the source and dangers of ionizing radiation:

  • Few causes of cancer are as verifiable as ionizing radiation. Ionizing radiation is the most comprehensively understood cause of cancer. There is a vast body of experimental and epidemiological evidence documenting the carcinogenic potential of radiation exposure.
  • Cancers caused by radiation are called It is widely agreed that the great majority of types of human cancer are capable of being caused by ionizing radiation given a sufficient exposure dose.
  • Considering that medical radiation is the largest source of human-made radiation and that exposure to sources of medical radiation are increasing world-wide, it is understandable that there is interest in understanding the influence of medical radiation on cancer risk. Examples of patients developing cancer following the employment of X-rays for diagnostic purposes or irradiation treatment for various diseases have been known for a very long time..
  • In 1955, The Lancet, a prestigious British medical journal, published a report by Court-Brown and Abbatt demonstrated that an increased incidence of leukemia following deep X-ray treatment for ankylosing spondylitis (a spinal deformity). In the mid-1970s, Smith and Doll reported a threefold excess risk of dying from leukemia among women treated with radiation for excessive menstrual or intermenstrual bleeding.
  • Therapeutic radiation doses received by cancer patients are among the highest level received by humans. There is incontrovertible evidence from clinical follow-up studies that a wide range of organs can develop cancers caused by radiation used in the treatment of a primary cancer.
  • Overall, significant strides have been made in reducing the patient’s exposure to diagnostic and therapeutic ionizing radiation. Nevertheless, for most persons, diagnosis and therapy remain the most important source of exposure to ionizing radiation.

CONCLUDING REMARKS

It is extremely tragic and incomprehensible that the medical (or cancer) establishment still uses ionizing radiation that is clearly proven and known to be carcinogenic (as established by the International Agency for Research on Cancer).

It is also inconceivable that such conventional cancer treatments should cause so much pain, agony and money and then the patient has to suffer another form of cancer, heart disease or disorders to the bones, etc. Hence the cycle of treatment has to be repeated.

Is this why conventional cancer treatment is referred to as “the Cancer Industry?”

We welcome your opinion.

If you or someone you love has been diagnosed with cancer, you want to do everything possible to beat the disease. But with so much conflicting advice and so many options available, how do you decide on the best treatment plan for you? In this new book (released May 2014), Professor Jane Plant and Professor Mustafa Djamgoz present a 10-step programme to help you beat cancer. At a time when you may be feeling helpless and confused, this book provides the essential guidance you need to take control of your life and regain your health.

The authors designed 10 simple steps to help cancer patients understand what cancer is, how to prevent it and how to manage it. Briefly, these are:

Step 1-Inform Yourself: reveals the latest findings about cancer cells and what they do.

Step 2-Find your balance: explains the importance of balance in body and mind, the need for an integrated approach and the levels of healing needed for recovery.

Step 3-Choose the right conventional therapies for you: details symptoms of cancer, information on screening, diagnosis, procedures and treatments including supportive and emerging therapies.

Step 4-Know which complementary therapies can help: separates and explains therapies that support treatment from those you should avoid.

Step 5-Eat to beat cancer: reveals the latest diet-linked research and details the Ten Essential Food Factors in the Beat Cancer diet that Prof Plant uses herself, which include eating an organic, alkaline, varied diet, cutting out dairy and reducing salt and sugar.

Step 6-Protect Yourself with exercise: how exercise protects against cancer and aids recovery if you are diagnosed.

Step 7-Be aware of your environment: how to limit your exposure to the Big 3 (pesticides, perfumes and plastics) plus simple measures to reduce your exposure, including advice on household and skincare brands, hair dyes and mobile phones.

Step 8-Manage stress: how to cope if you have a cancer diagnosis and how to find support.

Step 9-Broaden your awareness: why charities, doctors and the media are often constrained in the information they provide and why making decisions for yourself based on knowledge will enable you to take your life firmly into your own hands.

Step 10-Stay on course: how to stay in remission, keep healthy and alert, and live your life.

Of all the above Steps, we feel that Step 5—Eat to beat Cancer is the most important as this was the main factor that helped Prof Jane Plant survived breast cancer since 1987. In this chapter, the authors advocate 10 essential factors—these are: to eat real food, eat organic, to balance the diet, reduce intakes of acid generating foods, know good carbs and bad carbs, know the right fats, cut down on salt and sweeteners, know what to drink and lastly, to eat nutritious foods rather than supplements.

Professor Sir Graeme Catto, MD, FRCP, FRSE and President, College of Medicine and former President, General Medical Council and Vice Principal, King’s College, London wrote the forward and review of the book….these are his words:

“This is not a conventional cancer book. You will find many of the things you read illuminating, some of the information may be surprising and even, at times, shocking. However all of the information is backed up by scientific research and fully referenced”

Here are some of the illuminating and shocking information:

  • Doctors will never say that cancer is cured: only that it is in remission. If even a single cell remains after treatment, it can replicate and start the cancer growing again.
  • Cancer cells have an extraordinary ability to transform themselves. This means that treatments like chemotherapy, which are aimed at killing them, may actually encourage the development of drug-resistant cells which survive treatment and form a new cancer.
  • Aggressive chemotherapy aimed at destroying the cancer may not be the best treatment. In fact, it may be better to control the cancer and stop it from proliferating and spreading rather than trying to kill it outright.
  • Radiotherapy uses radiation to kill cancer cells by damaging their DNA. It can also act indirectly by interacting with water molecules inside cells, creating highly reactive and unstable free radicals which further disrupt the cell.
  • Hormone therapy is not a cure-all, as cancers can eventually become hormone resistant. Monoclonal antibodies (so-called “magic bullets”) may damage other tissues not connected to the original cancer.
  • Cancer is now such big business! It is an industry…one that is vast and ever expanding, more concerned with the orthodox management of the disease than prevention and preoccupied with new therapies…etc
  • Drugs mean big profits for manufacturers, distributors, lobbyists and PR agencies! When the stakes are so high it is hardly surprising that the voices of those who advocate prevention as well as cure are difficult to hear.
  • Charities, research institutions and healthcare providers also have to work with whoever is the government of the day. So they have to be seen to ‘fit’ the established way of thinking, talk the right language, and be wary of rocking any boats. Otherwise, they may see their funding dry up….their focus is often on the economics of business, rather than public interest and safety.
  • There are a lot of controversies over breast-cancer screening….for every life saved; three women had treatment for a cancer that would never have become life threatening. Likewise mass prostate screening results in over-diagnosis which could mean some men could face unnecessary treatment with drastic life-changing consequences.
  • CT scans use more ionizing radiation than regular X-rays…repeated CT scans might eventually cause a second cancer.
  • Vested interests in the food industry manipulate politicians and others in the cancer establishment. Evidence is clear that it is the Western diet, full of animal-based foods such as meat and dairy and refined and processed food that is a large part of the cancer problem.
  • The biochemistry of how our bodies process the food we eat is complex, yet medical training contains little, if any, nutritional biochemistry. With such limited knowledge of expert science, perhaps it is not surprising that many doctors and experts and dietitians continue to reject the role of diet as part of cancer treatment. Worse, they (doctors and dietitians) even recommend foods that have been shown to promote cancer by leading researchers in the best universities in the world.

The above are just some of the “shocking information” found in Beat Cancer….there are a lot more shocking information waiting for you to discover. If you are interested, have a chat with us.

BOOK REVIEW: THE FORSYTHE ANTI-CANCER DIET

AntiCAncer Diet

by Yeong Sek Yee & Khadijah Shaari

The author, Dr James Forsythe, MD, HMD is a board-certified medical oncologist and also a board-certified homeopath. In that capacity of an integrative oncologist, he serves as both a standard-medicine oncologist and also a homeopath capable of administering non-toxic and effective natural therapies that traditional doctors shun.

In his Century Wellness Clinic (http://www.centurywellness.com) in Reno, Nevada, Dr Forsythe introduces options, hope, healing and recovery in treating cancer. He integrates conventional and complementary treatments with proper nutrition playing a big role in his treatment of cancer patients at his clinic. Why does he place so much emphasis on nutrition? Here are some reasons:

  • The primary culprits in igniting most cancers are the foods we eat…the danger intensifies due to the contaminated environment loaded with excessive carcinogens, radiation and deadly chemicals.
  • What we choose to eat or to avoid ingesting play a critical role in overall recovery and for maintenance of good health.
  • Up to 70% of cancers are caused by inadequate diets or eating the wrong foods such as meals likely to generate free radicals or carcinogens.
  • What we consume in today’s fast-paced society contains extremely harmful chemicals.
  • Many patients had been wrongly led to believe by other medical professionals that standard chemotherapies or high-priced drugs were the only viable or potentially helpful treatments.

Dr Forsythe further lamented that “greedy, selfish and profit-oriented major pharmaceutical companies and the mainstream standard medical industry refrain from championing good nutrition to battle cancer. In fact, these entities only push expensive drugs–some of which are of questionable effectiveness and also poisonous chemotherapies, many of which are ineffective.” (Read Chapter 3 “Greedy Big Pharma Shuns Diet Benefits” and Chapter 4 “Some Standard Doctors Inflict Damage”).

According to Dr Forsythe’s vast experience in treating cancer patients, almost all allopathic physicians fail to tell cancer patients of the urgent need to have healthy diets to assist in their recovery particularly amid standard poisonous chemotherapy and radiation treatments. However, the diet recommendations in the Forsythe Anti-Cancer Diet are not something mysterious. A lot of the diet suggestions are shared by many other integrative doctors and oncologists as well as alternative/complementary practitioners. Some of Dr Forsythe’s dietary recommendations are:

  • Refrain from all simple sugars for life–no matter what type of cancer you have. Cancer essentially loves and thrives on–and even needs–sugars in order to survive and to thrive while ravaging the human body.
  • Avoid acidic foods–the disease thrives in acidic environments. Meat and a huge percentage of processed synthetic meals are acidic–such as chemical-laden foods like hot dogs, bacon, sugar-laden snacks, ice cream, candy, soft drinks and other foods that have been highly modified.
  • Junk food or extremely unhealthy highly processed microwaveable meals and snacks sold in plastic containers and wrappers.
  • Avoid all GMO/bioengineered foods. The ‘gut’ of the human body is not equipped to efficiently process bioengineered foods. Big food producers spray crops with dangerous cancer-causing chemicals or to cram meals with unnatural additives and preservatives during the processing phase.
  • Avoid refined wheat–today’s wheat has so many highly complex sugars that eating a single slice of wheat bread possesses far more sugars than a single candy bar.
  • Avoid drinking chlorinated water–an improperly functioning intestinal tract can prevent the body from absorbing adequate or necessary nutrients.
  • Eat fermented foods to strengthen the intestinal tracts–food like yogurts, probiotics, sauerkraut or kimchi.
  • Farm animals intended for eventual use as human food are fed new substances or medicines such as hormones and prescription antibiotics. When eating meat, people eventually get contaminated with these potentially cancerous substances.
  • Eat a variety of foods deemed to have antioxidant attributes that enable the body to fight or to remove free radicals (remember free radicals causes cancer).
  • Dangers of food preparation–grilling, barbecuing, overheating, frying of foods creates free radicals and carcinogens.
  • Eat food loaded with flavonoids–onions, berries, white/green tea, parsley, pulse, citrus fruits, etc.
  • Eat natural antioxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E, resveratrol and carotenoids.
  • Avoid all forms of “trans fats” also called “unsaturated fats” which is often blamed for generating free radicals that cause inflammation.
  • Increase intake of Omega-3 fatty acids such as oily fish, flaxseed and lots of vegetables.
  • The processing of many sweet-tasting foods often involves extremely dangerous mercury. This intensifies white sugar’s already-serious dangers. A good example is high-fructose corn syrup, which is an unnatural food found nowhere in nature. Multiplying the danger, the production (of HFCS) involves caustic soda that scientists admittedly call “mercury grade”. HFCS is used in all soda pop, canned soups, salad dressing, cereals, packaged and canned foods. So read the labels carefully.
  • Buy only organic produce–you’ll minimize the amount of toxins that your body needs to process.
  • Avoid fruits and vegetables that are intentionally exposed to radiation. Irradiation (so called “sterilization of food”) exposes these crops to “ionizing radiation” which is carcinogenic (Read our article “The Dark Side of Radiation Therapy” at the following link: https://cancercaremalaysia.com/2014/05/24/the-dark-side-of-radiation-therapy/).
  • The eating of irradiated foods becomes tantamount to exposing the body to the ravages of nuclear fallout or a nuclear explosion.

In summary, Dr Forsythe’s main theme is to eat natural, whole and unprocessed foods– essentially a plant-based diet. There are many, many more books similar to the Dr James Forsythe dietary recommendations and a lot of them are written by medical doctors and cancer researchers.

A cancer patient’s survival could hinge on diet during treatment. Most standard oncologists never mention or discuss this issue with their patients. Many allopathic physicians are likely to scoff at a cancer patient’s questioning about the need for natural, untainted foods.

EAT TO BEAT CANCER

Beat-Cancer-Jane-Plant

Review by Yeong Sek Yee & Khadijah Shaari

In the book, BEAT CANCER, (released May 2014), Professor Jane Plant and Professor Mustafa Djamgoz present a 10-Step programme to help cancer patients overcome cancer. Of all the 10 Steps presented, we feel that Step 5—Eat to beat Cancer is the most important as this was the main factor that helped Prof Jane Plant survive breast cancer since 1987.

In this chapter, the authors advocate 10 essential Food Factors—these are: to eat real food, eat organic, to balance the diet, reduce intakes of acid generating foods, know good carbs and bad carbs, know the right fats, cut down on salt and sweeteners, know what to drink and lastly, to eat nutritious foods rather than supplements.

Below are the some salient points from Step 5:

  • More recently, the distinguished nutritional biochemist Professor T. Colin Campbell of Cornell University has shown that the right diet prevents many common cancers, and that diet may also be the key to turning on–and turning off—existing cancers.
  • What we eat can directly or indirectly, creates conditions in which cancer can flourish, or alternatively provide protection so that cancer does not take hold.
  • While the genes we are born with are there for life, “bad” genes such as cancer genes do not cause problems if they are not turned on or “expressed.” There is increasing evidence that diet is important in determining whether cancer genes are expressed.
  • If we consume too many acid generating foods for too long so that our bodies become acidic, it provides an ideal environment in which cancer can flourish…acidic conditions help maintain the acid envelope around cancer which in turn helps it to invade other tissues and to metastasize.
  • Popular high-protein/low-carb diets which rely on your body using protein rather than carbohydrate for energy effectively attacks the fabric of your body as it tries to create energy from the wrong fuel. This acidifies the body and creates toxic chemicals. It is like burning your furniture to warm your house instead of switching on the central-heating boiler.
  • What are acid generating foods? These are:
  • All animal protein, including eggs, meat, and dairy is strongly or very strongly acid producing or acid generating.
  • Many cereals and pulses such as lentils and peas are moderately acid generating.
  • Fizzy drinks and colas high in phosphorus are acid generating
  • What are alkali generating foods? These are:
  • Most fruits and vegetables, even tomatoes and citrus fruits such as lemons, are alkali generating.
  • Herbs and spices, such as ginger and garlic, and dried herbs, such as parsley and coriander, are strongly alkali-generating.
  • Tea, including many herbal teas, many mineral waters and soya milk, are moderately alkali generating or nearly neutral.
  • Animal proteins are often high in messenger molecules such as growth factors and hormones that are chemically identical to our own. Oestrogen is a good example. It can promote breast and ovarian cancers as consuming an animal-based diet increases circulating levels of oestrogen. (NB: Oestrogen is considered a Category 1 carcinogen by The International Agency for Research on Cancer).
  • The animal protein considered most risky for cancer patients is casein, the main protein found in cow’s milk and dairy products. Dairy foods contain a cocktail of highly biochemically active substances, especially hormones and growth factors which are increasingly strongly linked to cancer.
  • Cow’s milk has been shown to contain 35 different hormones and 11 growth factors, and one recent study identified 20 pharmacologically active substances in cow’s and goat’s milk which included many pharmaceutical residues as well as oestrogens.
  • Most edible plant foods provide adequate amounts of proteins…especially if combined with nuts or seeds or grains which will provide you with the complete protein you need.
  • Eat whole unrefined grains which help regulate blood sugar, lower insulin levels and provide cancer-protective fibre and nutrients.
  • Focus on eating poly-unsaturated and mono-unsaturated fats and aim to eat more foods rich in omega-3 fats and fewer of those rich in omega-6 fats.
  • Avoid refined sugars and cut down on sodium as well…sodium plays an important role in cancer cells’ growth, signaling and metastasis so it makes sense to keep your salt intake as low as possible.
  • Eat organically as far as possible to avoid pesticide residues and environmental contaminants which may increase cancer risk.

The following are some shocking comments by the 2 authors:

  • Vested interests in the food industry manipulate politicians and others in the establishment. This confuses the public about the real causes of cancer.
  • Evidence is clear that it is the Western diet, full of animal based foods such as meat and dairy and refined and processed food that is a large part of the problem.
  • Most of us take it for granted that health professionals are experts on everything to do with health. That is simply unrealistic.
  • While many—particularly those cancer specialists who are research active—provide excellent advice on the orthodox management of cancer, few are experts in nutrition.
  • The biochemistry of how our bodies process the food we eat is complex, yet medical training contains little, if any, nutritional biochemistry. With such limited knowledge of expert science, perhaps it is not surprising that many doctors and dietitians continue to reject the role of diet as part of cancer treatment.
  • Worse, they (doctors and dietitians) may even recommend foods that have been shown to promote cancer by leading researchers in the best universities in the world.

We strongly urge you to read more on the subject of nutrition and cancer. In all probability your doctor/oncologist would have advised you that “you can eat anything you like.” Is this sound and truthful advice? To find the truth, read the following:

  • FOOD AND CANCER by Dr Chris Teo….everything about nutrition and cancer explained in simple terms.
  • HEALTHY COOKING by Dr Chris Teo and Mrs Teo….lots of delicious recipes.

If you are hard working enough, read the following:

  • ANTI-CANCER A NEW WAY OF LIFE by Dr David Servan-Schreiber, MD, PhD who was a clinical professor of psychiatry and co-founder of the Center for Integrative Medicine. He passed away in 2011 – after 19 years with brain tumour. (Read Chapter 8: The Anti-Cancer Foods…in fact, we recommend that you read the whole book)
  • LIFE OVER CANCER by Dr Keith I. Block, MD, Director of Integrative Medical Education at the University of Illinois College of Medicine and Medical Director of the Block Center for Integrative Cancer Treatment in Evanston, Illinois. (Read Chapter 4: The Anti-Cancer Diet and Chapter 5: The Life Over Cancer Core Diet Plan).
  • NATURAL STRATEGIES FOR CANCER PATIENTS by Dr Russell Blaylock, MD and a board-certified neurosurgeon and formerly the Professor of Neurosurgery at the Medical University of Mississippi. (Read the whole book–it is all about nutrition and cancer and also valuable information on how chemotherapy is poisoning you and how radiotherapy is burning you–to death).
  • THE CHINA STUDY by Dr T. Colin Campbell, PhD, who was the Professor Emeritus of Nutritional Biochemistry at Cornell University. (Read the whole book to understand why nutrients from animal-based foods increase tumor development while nutrients from plant-based foods decrease tumor development.)
  • YOU CAN CONQUER CANCER, A NEW WAY OF LIVING by Dr Ian Gawler, a veterinarian and decathlon athlete before his diagnosis, is Australia’s most “notorious” cancer patient and long term survivor. (Read Chapters 11-14 to find out that “although diet may not be the total answer to cancer, but without a good diet, there is no answer”).

There are lots of other such books written by oncologists/doctors/cancer researchers/survivors, etc. However, if you choose to follow the advice of our Malaysia boleh oncologists/doctors, you can only dream of the possibility of a remission.

The choice is yours.

Quotations from: German Cancer Therapies by Dr. Morton Walker

German Cancer Therapies

Writing in the Foreword the son of the author, Randall Walker wrote:

  • “You have cancer” is the diagnosis we all dread hearing. Most people tend to assume such a diagnosis is synonymous with a death sentence.
  • And yet, thousands around the world do rid their bodies of cancer, especially those patients who venture beyond the confines of oncology treatment as it is now practiced in North America.
  • You may be shocked when I reveal that some of the best natural and nontoxic therapies for healing cancer are not allowed to be administered in the United States or Canada because of misguided governmental regulations.
  • German oncologists are curing cancer patients without radical surgery, debilitating chemotherapy or destructive radiation.
  • Treatments German physicians are using enhance the human body’s own inherent capacity to destroy malignant cells. These procedures are quite different from what the usual North American therapies provide.
  • American and Canadian cancer treatments often are so toxic to the human body that they destroy many healthy cells along with the malignant cells, and result in terribly weakened immunity in the process.
  • In contrast, many German cancer specialists have totally abandoned the usual well-established, conventionally practiced procedures so as to avoid poisoning the patient. Rather, they have looked elsewhere and collected an oncological arsenal from around the world.
  • Americans and Canadians may now fight off cancer without any need to surrender their bodies to blind faith in North American cookbook medicine.

In the Introduction of this book, Dr. Morton Walker wrote:

  • I’ve seen too many friends and relatives, and my much loved wife, Joan, suffer terribly before finally succumbing to this disease. It has been my mission, regardless of cost or time, to uncover and report on anticancer therapies wherever they’re to be found.
  • My need is to reveal to everyone techniques of treatment that not only are effective and successful against cancer but also are the type that cause no torture for the hapless patient.
  • Above all I have searched for remedies unabusive to or nonsuppressive of the human immune system.
  • Chemotherapy and radiation therapy – really are crude disease-fighting weapons with limited effectiveness.
  • The conventional weapons against cancer usually leave patients in a state of weakness, nauseated, bald, depressed and otherwise uncomfortable.
  • Practically none of these adverse effects occur when natural and nontoxic holistic therapies are integrated into a patient’s treatment protocol.
  • One survey after another has made it abundantly clear that Americans and Canadians are disillusioned with the failing cancer therapies of mainstream drug-focused oncology.
  • Almost everyone with medical insight acknowledges that the industrial / pharmaceutical / medical complex is incapable of or has no intention of providing any kind of curative procedure for cancer.
  • My investigations have convinced me that this is true.
  • From firsthand research, I have discovered that excellent natural and nontoxic therapies do exist. They lie awaiting our use everywhere except the United States and Canada. That’s because the American pharmaceutical industry has its very own agenda. It has a powerful grip on the way medicine is practiced in North America.
  • I have observed that most American medical practice for treating cancer is nonholistic and totally destructive. If, by chance, a therapeutic effect does result – well, that particular patient is just lucky to possess a strong immune system.

BOOK REVIEW: DEFEAT CANCER…LIKE I DID TWICE WITH NO CHEMOTHERAPY OR RADIATION

Defeat Cancer Twice

Review by Yeong Sek Yee & Khadijah Shaari

At the 3rd Malaysian International Conference on Holistic Healing for Cancer organized by Cansurvive Centre Malaysia (www.cansurvive.org.my) in October 2013, we met an Australian lady who introduced us to the above book written by an Australian cancer survivor, Barry Thomson. The book, for some strange reason is only available from the publisher in Queensland or from the author (www.defeatcancertwice.com).

In April 2003, Barry Thomson, a businessman, was diagnosed with two primary concurrent melanomas. This meant that he had two separate deadly melanomas, each with the potential to spread and develop secondary melanoma. Basically, this doubled his chances of dying from melanoma cancer. His own family doctor twice advised his wife to “sell your business and do anything that you have ever wanted to do.” Clearly he believed that his two melanomas would prove to be terminal. His only chance to beat melanoma was to find his own cure or he would surely die.

Barry was also told by a leading oncologist, that no treatment was available as chemotherapy and radiation are ineffective against melanoma. Barry was grateful to this HONEST oncologist who made him realize that he had to seek healing utilizing natural therapies.

Barry admits that, in 2003 he had (and still have) no medical background or training as he started a frantic search for information that would show him how to use natural therapies to become free of melanoma. His own extensive research, plus information from numerous books by cancer survivors and others, enabled him to compile a cancer fighting regimen which helped him to defeat his melanomas.

This resulted in his first book, “Join Our Escape from Death Row-Cancer Jail” which was publish in late 2007. (Website: www.cancerjailescape.com).

In June 2008, Barry had to battle terminal cancer for a second time. He was diagnosed with bowel cancer (also known as colon cancer) which totally blocked his large bowel. He underwent successful surgery to remove the tumour but, due to twists in the small bowel preventing intake of food, he underwent a second emergency surgery twelve days later. Extremely ill, he spent four nights in Intensive Care and was lucky to survive. He spent a total of 33 nights in hospital.

In March 2009, Barry had a third major surgery to rebuild his stomach and repair an incisional hernia and abdominal muscle separation. Subsequently, Dr. Matthew Carmody, his surgeon, told him that “100% definitely” he had cancer cells in his lymph system. He strongly recommended six months of chemotherapy for a “27% better chance of beating the cancer.” Barry declined and decided to use his experience in overcoming his melanomas in 2003 to eliminate the bowel cancer cells.

Colonoscopies in May 2010 and July 2012 showed NO POLYPS and NO CANCER. In July 2012 Dr. Carmody told Barry “Forget bowel cancer. You have certainly beaten it. See me again in six years for the sole purpose of checking for polyps with a colonoscopy.” It is now more than five years since his original diagnosis of bowel cancer.

After defeating melanoma and bowel cancer, Barry continued his research to find more and more effective natural cancer attackers. He gained a wealth of new and superb cancer-fighting information. In 2010, he felt it would be appropriate to write a second book to share this additional knowledge he had acquired with people fighting cancer.

It is not the intention of this review to discuss  all the natural healing methods that Barry Thomson used to heal his melanomas and bowel cancer except to mention that some of the modalities that he used included hyperthermia, the Gerson therapy, Cantron, the Dr Johanna Budwig Cancer protocol, hydrogen peroxide, Cansema for skin cancer and proper nutrition. The book also lists other natural healing methods that Barry has researched and found useful such as far-infrared saunas, herbal teas, probiotics, juicing, wheatgrass and other sprouts, getting rid of parasites, etc

We do not intend to discuss the merits or demerits of Barry’s healing methods except suffice to mention that when one is diagnosed with cancer (any form of cancer), one has a wide choice of healing methods. The usual so –called “scientifically tested” protocols of chemotherapy and radiation, etc is just one of the many methods to heal cancer. You certainly do have choices just like Barry Thomson and many others.

Do read and investigate further first before you jump into the bandwagon (of conventional cancer treatments). As Barry said…”the true facts of the situation are that, while still in total shock over their cancer diagnosis, patients are very quickly rushed into chemotherapy and/or radiation treatments”

If you would like to read/research further on the other healing modalities for cancer other than chemotherapy and/or radiotherapy or together with chemotherapy and radiotherapy, we recommend that you check out the following books:

  • AN ALTERNATIVE MEDICINE GUIDE TO CANCER by Dr John Diamond, MD and Dr Lee Cowden, MD with Burton Goldberg. This is a very comprehensive text which tells that cancer can be reversed using clinically proven Complementary and Alternative therapies. NB: The authors also wrote CANCER DIAGNOSIS: WHAT TO DO NEXT which explains clinically proven, safe and nontoxic treatments.

BOOK REVIEW: TREATABLE AND BEATABLE HEALING CANCER WITHOUT SURGERY

Treatable-and-beatable-canc

by Yeong Sek Yee & Khadijah Shaari

The author, Carolyn Gross is the founder of Creative Life Solutions, and an award-winning international speaker, trainer, and holistic coach with more than twenty years of experience as a CranioSacral therapist and facilitator for wellness retreats. She is the past president of the National Speakers Association of San Diego and also the author of staying Calm in the Midst of Chaos.

In the summer of 2003, Carolyn was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer (with a 3.5 cm lump). Always proactive with her healthcare and conscientious about annual mammograms, she found herself referred to a specialist who proposed the same treatment her grandmother had received thirty years ago—complete mastectomy, radiation and chemotherapy. Her diagnosis traumatized her.

Her specialist (surgeon) announced…”your cancer is advanced, you should have been on my operating table 2 years ago…you have no option but a complete mastectomy: the tumour is too large for anything else. And this is a high-risk surgery. There are no guarantees.” Her oncologist also concurred with the surgeon…”after the mastectomy; we’ll begin full courses of radiation and chemotherapy, and then reconstructive surgery….and also there are no guarantees.”

Carolyn left the ordeal wondering, how do people survive the medical system?

Healing cancer without surgery is a huge undertaking. How did Carolyn find the confidence to not have the traditional surgery and chemotherapy recommended by three doctors? Where did she find the power to do things differently?

As a determined and informed consumer, she conducted research that led her to Mexico, where she met Dr. Geronimo Rubio, a physician whose successful treatment has helped hundreds. Her results were remarkable as well. Within a year her cancer was gone. She kept her breast and her hair and was spared the physical horrors breast cancer patients often suffer. Four years later, she is cancer-free and still going strong.

Visit the following to find out more about Carolyn Gross:

The author believes that when it comes to diseases and selecting treatments, our free will and power of choice are important factors that most people don’t fully utilize. Many patients let doctors dictate how long they will live, how their lives will be changed, and even what they should believe. When engaging in the battle with cancer, you need to claim your place of power…and not after certain treatments are underway or completed.

The treatment option Carolyn chose to heal her stage 3 breast cancer was immunotherapy, using a customized vaccine created from her own cancer cells. So off to Mexico she went—to the Rubio Cancer Center, Tijuana where Dr. Geronimo Rubio, MD has been treating cancer patients with his own treatment regimen which he calls “integrated therapy” for the past 25 years.

Dr Rubio uses a broad spectrum of treatments from low doses of radiation and chemotherapy, vaccine injections to stimulate production of new white blood cells, diet to keep the tumour from growing and a strong detoxification to flush the body. The core treatment is the making of customized cancer vaccines that educate the immune system to attack and destroy the cancer. Essentially, it is cancer treatment without surgery. And this is what Carolyn Gross did.

For more information on Dr Rubio’s cancer immunology and diet, visit the following website……Link: http://cancerimmunologyrubiotreatment.com/wp/

Carolyn now works as a Patient Advocate for the Rubio Cancer Center. Watch her at the following links:

In addition to the above cancer vaccine treatments, Carolyn follows a strict nutrition and detoxification regime as she believes that diet is important as “consuming the wrong foods can make us sick and cause our organs to malfunction.” She stayed away from sugar and processed foods as cancer cells are nourished by them which later produce inflammation that promote tumour development.

Besides taking anti-oxidants to protect cells from free radicals, Carolyn also advise cancer patients to have a regular detoxification program during and after cancer treatments. This can be in the form of juice and teas fasting, salt baths, coffee enemas and colonics, massage and regular movement (i.e. exercise) as movement is the heart muscle of the lymph system.

The author is also a strong advocate of “quelling emotional storms.” According to her, “emotional storms can be a strange ride because we often don’t know when they are going to surface…and if you are going through hell…don’t stop! Just keep right on going, and you’ll ride it out.” Anger weakens the functioning of the cells, so getting rid of anger is a huge and necessary step.

Carolyn has survived breast cancer for 10 years already without undergoing the conventional slash, burn and poison treatment methods in the USA. Instead she went to Mexico for the customized vaccine treatment (together with low dose radiation and chemotherapy) coupled with a strict nutrition and detoxification protocol. Is she “cured” according to the conventional cancer treatment wisdom?

Yes, she had a choice. Carolyn Gross has treated and beaten her breast cancer.

BOOK REVIEW: THE WOMAN WHO KNEW TOO MUCH: ALICE STEWART AND THE SECRETS OF RADIATION

Woman who knew too much

by Yeong Sek Yee & Khadijah Shaari

This biography illuminates the life and achievements of a remarkable woman scientist who revolutionized the concept of radiation risk.  Written by Gayle Greene, who was the Professor of Women’s Studies and Literature, Scripps College, UK, the book is compelling reading for activists and policy makers.

In the 1950s Alice Stewart began research that led to her discovery that fetal X rays double a child’s risk of developing cancer. It was towards the end of 1955 that Dr. Alice Stewart, head of the Department of Preventive Medicine at Oxford University, first became aware of a sharp rise in leukemia among young children in England. Dr Stewart subsequently discovered that the number of children dying of this cancer of the blood had risen over 50 percent in only a few years. In the United States an increase about twice as large had occurred. One aspect of this rise was extremely puzzling: the leukemia seemed to strike mostly children over two to three years of age.

Dr. Stewart undertook another study to find out. With the assistance of health officers throughout England and Wales, she obtained detailed interviews with the mothers of all of the 1694 children in those counties who had died of cancer in the years 1953 to 1955, as well as with an equal number of mothers of healthy children. By May 1957, the analysis of 1299 cases, half of which involved leukemia and the rest mainly brain and kidney tumors, had been completed. The data showed that babies born of mothers who had a series of X-rays of the pelvic region during pregnancy were nearly twice as likely to develop leukemia or another form of cancer, as those born of mothers who had not been X-rayed.

Subsequently, in a research paper she published in June 1958, Dr. Stewart concluded that the dose from diagnostic X-rays could produce a clearly detectable increase in childhood cancer when given during pregnancy and this was an extremely low dose. However, it took until 1980 before the major American medical groups recommend that doctors not routinely x-ray pregnant women—and even so, 266,000 pregnant women were x-rayed in that year. Dr Stewart believes that “it takes about 20 years…for an unpopular discovery to be digested and you’re lucky if it takes only that long.”

There were a few other very unpopular discoveries made by Dr Stewart and her team of researchers. Some of these are:

  • Radiation is the most powerful mutation known to man, a poison that no one can feel, smell, see, or detect until people drop dead.
  • There is no safe level of radiation…her research clearly debunked the universally accepted “threshold hypothesis” that claimed that there was a threshold below which radiation was safe.
  • Any dose of radiation, however small, is going to have an effect in the bodyany dose has the potential of damaging a cell…low dose may injure cells rather than kill them…and a surviving mutated cell can cause cancer or a birth defect.
  • Lower doses received over time might actually produce more cancer per unit of exposure than a single large dose. Dose fractionation increases the cancer risk.
  • Even more than the cancer threat is the genetic damage—the possibility of sowing bad seeds into the human gene pool…and the danger with recessive genes is that once they are into the gene pool, you can’t get them out.
  • Radiation damage to a cell may show up only after the cell has divided several times, producing a genomic instability that might result in broken or misshapen chromosomes and muted genes and early cell death.
  • Researchers found that children whose fathers were exposed to the highest levels of external radiation were six to eight times more likely to develop leukemia than were the controls…in other words there is a correlation between paternal exposure to radiation and childhood cancer.

As a woman scientist, she faced a significant amount of prejudice and ridicule from the male-dominated scientific community, and other groups who found it hard to accept the findings of her research that radiation was harmful even in low doses to unborn fetuses. Despite all this, she stood by her studies and research and eventually convinced doctors to stop x-raying pregnant women even though it took twenty years to eradicate the practice.

From about 1970, Stewart turned her attention to the underlying issue raised by her work: the serious underestimation, in her view, of the risks of exposure to radiation in nuclear power plants. She again astounded the scientific world with a study showing that the U.S. nuclear weapons industry is about twenty times more dangerous than safety regulations permit. The finding put her at the center of the international controversy over radiation risk.  Dr Stewart became one of a handful of independent scientists whose work is a lodestone to the anti-nuclear movement. In 1990, the New York Times called her “perhaps the Energy Department’s most influential and feared scientific critic.”

With her life time research experience in the field of radiation, Dr Stewart had a firsthand knowledge of the misuses and politicization of radiation science. The radiation field is so politicized, there is so much invested, ideologically and economically, that these scientists just cannot change their mind. They simply cannot say, “We may have been wrong.”

Politicized the field has been, and politicized the field remains. The Atomic Energy Commission had strong vested reasons for downplaying the effects of radiation and maintaining a safe threshold theory and continues to argue that low doses of radiation are negligible.

Marginalized by mainstream British medical research, starved of funding, blackballed, blacklisted, cold-shouldered, she has borne with more than her share of slights, snubs, and rebuffs. In her parting remark in the biography, Dr Stewart said, “If I were GOD tomorrow, I should take every job away from the nuclear physicists”

Dr Alice Stewart died in June 2002 at the age of 95. With her passing, gone are the days of researchers like Alice Stewart.
